Movie Monday: Part IV, The Resolution

It’s the final post in our Movie Monday series! In case you missed it, we are exploring the four parts of a typical story arc, using one of our client films: the Redstart Residence Short Documentary. The first three weeks, we talked about the Exposition, the Conflict (or Rising Action) and the Climax. This week, we are wrapping up the story arc with Part 4, the Resolution.

What is the Resolution?

After the climax and the conflict/tension in the story releases, the story arc then descends into the Resolution. The Resolution ties everything up at the end. It wraps up all the plot points, answers any lingering questions and reinforces the story’s theme. Let’s take a look at how we handled the climax for the Redstart Residence.

Redstart Residence: Resolution

Last week, we briefly touched on the fact that the design process served as the tension in the story arc and driving force for the characters in this film. However, Arc Three also wanted to showcase two equally important themes of a collaborative client relationship and their overall design philosophy. While these can be seen throughout the film in the characters and plot points, we wanted to use the Resolution (starting at 4:16) as an opportunity to focus on these themes more explicitly.

The natural conclusion to the design process is, of course, the construction and completion of the home. While we could go into way more detail about the construction process and all the challenges faced during that phase, that wasn’t the purpose of this particular story. This story was all about the design of the home. Arc Three provided us with some great behind-the-scenes images that we were able to incorporate into the film. These served as a perfectly succinct transition from Climax to Resolution. Next, we used this section of the film, with its serene music and completed home footage, to underscore the collaborative client relationship that can also be seen throughout the film. Finally, we end with our main characters, Garrett and Bryson, as they echo back to the very opening of the film with Arc Three’s thoughts on good design philosophy. After the viewer has gone thorough this journey of designing a home with the Arc Three team, they can now see the results of their design philosophy. The emphasis on their approach to design, along with the happy clients at the end serves as a satisfying ending to this story.

As we wrap up this storytelling series, we hope that it has provided some understanding of what goes into a story arc as well as the importance of writing/planning your story for your film. We believe in storytelling, because stories are what connect us and provide meaning behind brands and products. Film or video without storytelling is a wasted opportunity to engage with your audience. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it all out yourself! When we work with clients to create engaging films for their brand, the first part of our process is figuring out their unique story. Interested in telling your story? Give us a shout.
